Glasgow

Taking a roadtrip around Scotland has always been on our list of things to do but something we’ve never got round to actually doing. However this year we decided to go for it so we packed our bags and set off for an eight day trip along the West Coast – first stop Glasgow!

Accomodation:

After a three and half hour drive from Manchester, we checked in at the Grand Central Hotel which is right in the centre of town and was perfect for walking straight to the nearby shops and restaurants. We actually hadn’t realised at the time of booking that this hotel is attached directly onto Glasgow’s main train station. This wasn’t a problem as we were given a room away from the station which was absolutely huge! (Although make sure you ask at reception for a room away from the station as I think they do have some rooms which face onto it which are slightly noisier.) The hotel is very stylishly decorated, from the chandeliers in the main entrance hall to the bedrooms (we stayed in a standard double, although from the website the superior doubles look even nicer) and we were glad that we’d chosen to book this hotel.

Things to do:

Glasgow’s shopping district or the ‘Style Mile’  is impressive and has such a wide range of shops all in one place. There are also restaurants along the same stretch and the main street has a really nice atmosphere with beautiful buildings.

Glasgow Cathedral and Necropolis are also worth a visit and we spent time wandering around the stunning interior and the surrounding monuments. If you walk to the top of the Necropolis, you get some amazing views across Glasgow (a cemetery wouldn’t usually be on our list of ‘things to do on holiday’ but it is worth the visit!)

Food and eating out:

Would highly recommend the Willow Tea Rooms – we had breakfast at the Buchanan Street location which was a 5 minute walk from our hotel and the pancakes were delicious.

Rating: It was our first experience of Glasgow and although we only had a one night stay, we would definitely go back again for a long weekend to explore more of the city. Perfect place for a city break.
