After visiting San Francisco it is now one of my favourite places in the world – the atmosphere and character of the place is very clear to see and you come away feeling like you’ve really had an experience. We arrived having come from the South of California in our beach clothes of shorts and t-shirts and were surprised to find out the difference in temperature! It is a lot colder, particularly at night and in the evening we took much warmer clothes out with us.
Things we visited
- Golden Gate Bridge – we parked up over the far side of the bridge and took a walk to the centre. It is very impressive and the views are amazing although watch out for cyclists as you walk along.
- Fisherman’s Wharf area – we loved this part of the city as it had such a great atmosphere and there was so much to see. You can walk for miles along the front and there is so much variety of things to look at. You are spoilt for choice with the amount of seafood to eat which was brilliant.
- Alcatraz Island – we took the ferry over for the 4.30pm trip to Alcatraz. Once you get there the tour guide points you to the top of the island to enter the main building and start the tour. You are given a recorded walking tour to listen to through headphones and make your own way around the prison. It was very interesting and you are gripped by the tales of what happened as you make your way around. The views are again stunning from some of the vantage points as you look back at the city – and it is pointed out that the prisoners would have felt the same looking back at the bustling city, unable to get back. Alcatraz is also home to a great deal of wildlife including many bird colonies which you can see as you walk around.
San Francisco was one of my highlights of the trip and I would love to go back there one day.
