From LA we travelled to Santa Barbara and spent one night here as a stop-over before our next longer journey. This was the only hotel that we hadn’t already pre-booked and we chose another Best Western to stay in (as our first experience in Palm Springs had been so good.) The hotel was nice but we wished we’d had a bit more time to pick as there were some much better hotels along the beachfront. We walked along the pier and the beach which was lined with palm trees. We also had one of our best meals of the entire trip in Santa Barbara at the ‘Fishouse’ – I’d been looking for somewhere to have a tuna steak for ages and they served an amazing one!
The next day we set off with the aim of driving along ‘Big Sur’ and taking in the coast views we’d heard so much about. On the way we saw an ‘elephant seal viewing’ point signposted and decided to stop off and have a look. I didn’t think we’d see many but as soon as you park up and look over towards the beach, the whole area is covered with seals! It was an amazing sight and I’m so glad that we stopped to look.
We were glad we chose to take the longer option of driving through Big Sur as the views of the sea were stunning. We stopped off at Bixby Bridge to take some photos and take in more of the view and it was a great vantage point. We tried to drive with the roof down for most of the way but it was very windy! The drive was long but we were glad that we’d come this way as it was so memorable.
